Why would "American girls" have any more of a right to these spots
than women of other nationalities? A university should be equally open
to anyone, not just citizens of the country it was founded in.

To: U.S. Women's Collegiate Ice Hockey Clubs
From: American College Hockey Association (ACHA) - Women's Division
Date: Jan., 28, 2000

The American College Hockey Association (ACHA) is a non-profit organization
that currently includes 150 men's collegiate club ice hockey teams across
the United States in Divisions I, II and III. Each team is ranked and
competes for a national championship annually. The ACHA is currently
developing a women's division for the 2000-2001 season. We would like to
gather your responses so as to create a national women's division that best
meets your needs.

The women's division will include a national championship each year for
women's club teams in the United States. A polling system will be developed
to rank each team, which will decide the top teams to compete for the
national title. A web site will also be developed to post all results, news
and information relevant to the division. We hope that the inclusion under a
nationally recognized association will not only allow for a national
championship for women's club teams, but will also legitimize the
organization and development of women's club ice hockey at the university
level. ACHA also lends credibility to its programs through national
sponsorships, promotion and adherence to certain eligibility standards for
its student-athletes. For more information about the ACHA check out the
current site at www.achahockey.org A Women's Division section of the ACHA
will be up and running shortly.

I've heard a rumour that WTN (the Women's Television Network) might be
covering the National Women's Hockey League's playoffs in March.

Subject: Pelly Bay Esso Fun Days

Earlier this fall Nepean Girls Hockey Association, led by Rod Windover
and KL Sport "Sport Source for Women" teamed up to hold the
Stacy Wilson Hockey School.  This event gave some girls and women a
chance to receive some hockey instruction from Stacy Wilson, former
Canadian Team Captain and some local instructors.  At this event we
encouraged people to donate their used hockey equipment with our plans to
ship it up to Northern Canada.  We had Nunavut MP Nancy
Karetak-Lindell speak at our Press Conference and she actually
participated in the adult women's hockey clinic (she's a pretty good
player herself, she is the only women playing on the Liberal
hockey).  With donations of equipment received at the event and the
funds raised through registrations some of the used equipment was
repaired and some missing pieces were purchased (pelvic protectors were
in high demand).  In the end 20 boxes of equipment for girls hockey
in Pelly Bay was ready to be sent.

Here is the letter that was received from Kugaardjuq School in Pelly Bay, Nunavut.  It now reminds us why we do these type of things.

Pelly Bay Esso Fun Days
by Sonia Ihakkaq (with help from Jill Suzanne Sparks)
I have always wanted to play hockey. Two years ago my cousin let me=20
borrow his old equipment. I was so excited to start playing. I quit after
two practices. The boys didn't want me there, and I didn't want the boys
there. I was the only girl who had equipment; although many girls wanted to
play.
Last year I asked for hockey equipment for Christmas. My parents bought
me all brand new stuff. I still didn't want to play with the boys. My mom
told me to try it again and I did. I quit after one practice.
This year my teach, Jill Susanne Sparks, told us we were going to get
equipment for a girl's hockey team. She said the equipment would be for
only the girls and we would have our own team. I told my mom that day and
she said not to get too excited because all that equipment would cost a lot
of money. She didn't think Jill could get it. I signed up with all my
friends for the Esso Fun Days right away. Mine was the first name on Jill's
list, of course my little sister's was second. It seemed forever for the
equipment to come. Everyday we asked Jill when we could play. She kept
saying she would tell us soon. More and more girls wanted to play, and the
boys were getting more and more jealous.
Then came the big day. When Jill told us the plane was coming in with
twenty boxes of equipment for just girls all my friends ran up to the school
to help. There were two trucks full of boxes for us! Even the boys helped
take the boxes in to the school. All the girls were going crazy. It was
the most exciting day. Jill told us we weren't allowed to open the boxes
until she got them all sorted, so I went home to brag to my mom that Jill
had got the equipment. And, best of all it was free! People from down
south had given it to us. Even though I didn't need equipment, it meant I
could play hockey because all the other girls could play now.
We bugged Jill everyday that week till we could get our own sets of=20
equipment. We also bugged the boys about all the equipment we had,
including brand new sticks that were especially made for us. On Thrusday
afterschool all the girls got to walk around the room getting different
pieces of equipment. I helped teach the girls how to get dressed and told
them if something fit them or not. We took pictures of the whole thing. It
was so much fun. All of us couldn't wait till we got to play on Saturday.
On Saturday we were to meet at the school to pick up our equipment and
cut and tape sticks by 11:00am. By 10:00am all my friends had called and we
decided to be early instead (this surprised Jill as she knows we are always
late for school). A woman from Edmonton, Darlene, showed us how to cut and
tape our stick. Kalon, Jeff and Mike also helped get everything organized.
I think the funniest part of the whole weekend was watching the girls
get dressed. None of them know what went on when. Jill showed them how to
get dressed piece by piece. I laughed at my sister who looked like a
snowball more than a hockey player. I was dressed first and ready to go,
but we had to all go out together. The practice was so much fun. I could
have stayed out there all day. We begged Jill to let us play more, but she
said we had lots of fun for the day and we would get some more Ice on
Sunday. After practice some of the girls went to my house. My mom kept
telling us to be quiet. All we could talk about was hockey.
On Sunday, we played for two hours. I scored my first goal during five
on five. Jill said I couldn't keep the puck though. We got our pictures
taken all together for the people who sent us the equipment. I have never
sweated so much before, but I had so much fun. Most of the girls liked
playing five on five the best. I liked playing with girls so much better
than with boys. All the girls were trying their best and no one laughed at
you. We all laughed a lot though because none of us had played before so we
made a lot of mistakes. It didn't matter though because we were playing to
have fun. Jill told us that it didn't matter if we couldn't play really
good because we were out there to have fun.
On Monday the whole school had to give a cheer during the announcments
for all the girls who played in the Esso Fun Days. It felt really good to
have the whole school cheer for the girl's hockey team. We watched the
movie about the Women's Olympic Team. It was so cool. Our favorite players
were Angela James and Vickey Sunheria. The boys watched it too. At first
they didn't believe Jill when she said it was girls playing. They thought
it was boys.
Now we practice every Tuesday and Thrusday. We ask Jill everyday though
if we can practice. We call our team the Pelly Bay Polar Bears. More girls
want to play now, but we don't have enough equipment for everyone, so a lot
of times we share. Most of my friends asked for hockey equipment for
Christmas. We might go for a tournament to Gjoa Haven or Taloyak, we hope
anyways. Jill coaches us still. At the end of every practice she taps each
one of us with her stick and says "Good work!" I get embarassed every time
she does it, but we have lots of fun.
At the end of the year we want to challenge the boys to a game. Two=20
years from now I'm going to try out for the Arctic Winter Games. It would
be cool to play for the Nunavut team. I think I will play for a long time.
I am having so much fun!"

Glas Fieldhouse on Friday. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) scored her 16th goal of the season to give the Badgers an early 1-0 lead. The center poke-checked the puck past a Beaver defender and found herself one-on-one with BSU netminder Bre Dedrickson. A wrister past the goaltender gave Antony an unassisted tally at 2:06 in the first period. Bemidji State stayed in the game, tying the score at one apiece at 7:07 in the second period. Lisa Peters found a loose puck in the slot and put it over the right shoulder of Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) for the score. The Badgers regained the lead late in the period when Natascha Sherman (Seattle, Wash.) scored her second goal of the season at 18:37 off a rebound. Antony got credit for the helper with the original shot. BSU evened the game a second time when Peters scored off her own rebound for her second score of the game. Peters' tally at 8:05 in the third was unassisted. Less than two minutes later, UW finally went ahead for good when reigning WCHA Rookie of the Week, Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), took a shot that trickled past the Beavers' Dedrickson for the score. "Kelly Kegley with the game-winner," coach Julie Sasner recalled. "She came up big for us. She has been coming up big for us when we need her to." Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) added some insurance with an unassisted goal at 18:58. Paulsen's shot on a two-on-one break from her knees deflected off the skate of a BSU defender and into the net. MacMillan stopped 22 Beaver shots to improve to 7-3-1. Dedrickson made 25 saves, falling to 8-8-1 on the season. "We are a good enough team to get a lead, lose it, then get it back," commented Sasner on the two leads UW lost. "Our players did well to pull it out. The next step for us is to get a lead and hold on to it." Wisconsin (13-10-2 overall, 10-6-1 WCHA) looks to extend its winning streak to four games and attempt to earn its first WCHA season series sweep against Bemidji State (13-12-1, 4-12-1) tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Diane K. I am not quite sure) her pelvic protector. We live in Florida and can't find her one anywhere locally - save by special order that could take 2-3 weeks. I believe she was wearing a Bauer WPP XS. (is there an XXS ? If there is, maybe that was what she had) Her new season has just started. We just found her a size small at one of the rinks but it is still too big and hurts her. Are there shop owners/employees on this list who can sell me one, or do any of you parents of players up north have immediate access to one? I would be happy to send a check, (pay by credit card) and pay for next day or two day shipping. If you have the phone numbers of pro shops that have them in stock that might sell me one over the phone and ship it, that would be appreciated too. Ambria Thomas scored at 3:19 of the first period and Laura Slominski's short-handed goal gave the Gophers a 2-0 lead before Carisa Zaban scored on the power-play at 3:06 of the second period. Muzerall then took over, scoring the Gophers final four goals, giving her 20 goals in her last nine games, including 15 in her last four. Three of her goals were power-play markers and she now leads the nation with 11. The Gophers were 3-for-7 on the power-play against the Wildcats, the fourth time in five games they have score three goals with a player advantage.
