Subject: College Hockey Teams

For all those interested:

I wrote a message to the list serve some months back looking for information
on how to start a women's team at a university. I got so many replies with so
much great information. Everyone asked me to keep them updated on my progress
and unfortunately, I have lost the file that I saved all the addresses on. So
please forgive me for posting this to the entire list, but I know some of you
are interested.

Just to keep you up to date: I found that I must write a constitution
following all the rules set up by the university. The actually provided me
with a copy that I could modify to fit our team and that seems to help
tremendously. With that done, I have to find 10 people to say they are
interested in the team and sign the forms. And 4 of them have to be willing
to act as officers. 20% can be alumni so that seems a little easier. It seems
we are only a few short (yeah!) We also need a faculty/staff advisor which we
have already secured -- she also is an alumni and is interested in playing.
The only thing we really haven't found is a coach. Also, we were told that we
actually have a chance at becoming a school team (not just a club team) since
the school is short women's sports teams. (As opposed to the men who have
basically been told they have very little chance). There are also several
schools in the state of FL and nearby states that have women's teams and are
interested in playing if we can get this off the ground.

I am very excited as to all the progress that has been made since I first
posed the question. I found out there is another female at school who has
already done most of this leg work and just needs a little push to keep going.

Thanks again to all of you who have helped me over the months, either with
ideas or just encouragement. It all helps!

Some notes on that Islanders/Lightning game that Jill mentioned: Dan Cloutier
was suspended for 4 games without pay by the NHL for "kicking an opponent in
the head." I don't agree with kick an opponent in the head, even if he does
have a helmet on, for any reason, but the Islanders received 3 penalties for
Goaltender Interference during that game. These were not light calls either,
they were serious runs to knock Clout of his game. I know that, as a
goaltender myself, if I had someone coming after me like they did to him the
night, I would be seriously upset and probably would have been looking for
revenge too.

By the way, Jill you can play on my team anytime too... I'd give anything to
have a couple of defense people who could actually clear out the slot!!!!

Just my 2 cents.

HELP!!!!!!

I need some advice from all the goaltenders out there. I finally broke down
and bought myself a brand new set of goal pads (Heaton Helite IV 6100's).
After playing for years in used and low end stuff. They fit great and I
really love them, but I need them to break in faster than they are. I was
told they have a slow break in period but there must be something I can do to
speed the process up. Any ideas?

Thanks

I got new pads last year... What I did was I tightened the straps really
tight and bound them together so that the knees were bent back and the toes
were bent up.

After tightening all the straps (tight!) except the top knee strap, take the
top knee strap and loop it through one of the lower straps and tighten it as
much as you can so as to bend the pad in half. Then take a string (like a
skate string) and tie it to the toe and loop it through the straps that are
on the front of the pad and tie it tight so tha the toe bends upwards a
little.

I tied my pads up this way in between practices and games for about 2 months
and it seemed to help a lot.

Hope that helps!

I was one of the people who wrote to you. I'm so glad to hear how much
progress you've made. You've got a constitution, you've started to find
players and officers, you've found a faculty advisor .... that's a great
start.

Another great thing your new club has going for them is that you are a
goalie! And a goalie who owns her own gear! This is a big deal. It's way
harder to get going if you don't have a goalie with equipment.

Some thoughts on finding and working with coaches for university club teams:
Having more than one coach is a good thing.
It can work very well to have playing coaches.
If you find a woman in town who is an experienced player but not eligible
for your club because she isn't connected with your college, you might try
recruiting her as a coach.
It can work okay to have a player's boyfriend as a coach, and it can be
disastrous.
You might want to be careful about promising the "head coach" position to
someone before you see how he or she works out.
It would probably also be a good idea to explain to your prospective
coaches the limitations of their role (such as, "this club does not cut
people" or "you can't decide by yourself who gets to play in the games".)
Try sending your coaches and some of your player-leaders to a USA Hockey
Associate level coaching clinic.

Again, congratulations! You're off to a great start.

Subject: Goalie Camps or Training for a Young Woman

My daughter is a freshman in high school and has just begun to play hockey
for her boarding school team as a goalie. She is really enjoying the sport
and wants to improve her skills over the summer. We live in New Jersey but
she would be willing to travel to a boarding camp.

Does anyone have suggestions on what sort of camp or additional training
might be fun and safe for her this summer?

I apologize if this subject is covered in the archives, but I have not been
able to locate these records. Thanks in advance for any advice. Anne

CanAm has programs for boys and girls ages 8-17. They have 1, 2, and 3 week
programs for kids.

I attended their adult hockey camp for the first time this past summer. I
cannot say enough about it!! The coaching was excellent, there was a lot of
ice time, and a lot of fun off ice activities as well. I definitely plan
on going back this year!

I'm sure that the youth camps are very well run too.

Their website is www.canamhockey.com

Good luck!
