List-Id: A mailing list for women who play hockey and people involved in women's hockey
Welcome to all of our subscribers on the Women-in-Hockey list!
We are now up and running on the new mailing list server, and it is
now ready for your use again. We appreciate your cooperation and
patience during the migration to the new server. I apologize that it
took a little longer than I said it would yesterday -- we didn't run
into any significant problems, but once I started the migration, I
decided to get completely paranoid, and on top of doing three
complete backups to tape, I copied the disk of the old server onto
the new one in case I need to grab something, and it takes time to
copy a gigabyte of data, even other ethernet. That added a number of
hours to the migration (but makes me sleep a LOT easier), and I
decided about 2:30 in the morning that I was too tired to finish it,
and I've learned (the hard way) that it's better to take a few hours
nap than screw it up out of exhaustion...
There have been a LOT of changes here, and I want to give you a quick
summary and a look at where things are headed.
Important: if you've kept copies of the instructions from the old
list server, THROW THEM OUT. They're worthless now. The message we
sent when we enabled the subscription on the new server had the URLs
to everything you need to manage your subscription.
Warning: if you were a subscriber as a digest, you will have to go to
the web site and turn the digest back on. Unfortunately, there was no
way for me to preserve subscription options in the transition -- my
apologies for the hassle (on the other hand, I encourage everyone to
explore the new list server, because it has some nice new features
and options you might be interested in)
We have retired the old server, an Apple Network Server running AIX
4.1.5 and majordomo as a mailing list server. Our new server is an
Apple G3/350, running Yellowdog Linux, and the new mailing list
software is mailman 2.0. There has also been significant changes all
over the web sites, a new mailing list directory replacing the old
www.lists.plaidworks.com, lots of software upgrades and endless
details changed. It's literally new hardware, a new OS, and every
piece of software was either rewritten, replaced or upgraded.
Since so much has been tweaked along the way, it is very important
that if you run into typos, broken links, server errors, glitches,
problems, failures or any other oopsie, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! the
transition went quite smoothly overall, but I'm sure there are still
problems to be fixed (because I keep fixing the ones I find), and
please don't assume I know about it -- if I know about it, I've
probably already fixed it.
New features:
o The system is now MIME-aware -- no more hassles trying to set up
your mailers to send text-only messages. For now, the system strips
all of the non-text parts of the message for you, but we intend on
adding the ability to send MIME/HTML based email as soon as we can do
it safely; right now, the risk of passing viruses around is too
great, so I need to build filters for that. But this resolves what is
clearly the biggest problem we've had on the lists the last few
months.
o MIME digests -- we now support both the previous form of digest in
plain text, and a new form, called MIME-digest, which is the default.
MIME-digests are encoded in a way that allows mail clients to do more
things with them. If you switch to digest mode and have problems
reading the digests, go to the web pages and switch your subscription
to the non-MIME version of the digests and you'll be okay.
o NOMAIL support -- you can now turn off delivery temporarily without
unsubscribing, so you don't lose your options any more if you want to
stop delivery for a short time.
o other subscription options -- see the subscription web pages for
the documentation.
o new web-based archives, replacing the defunct webx.lists.plaidworks.com site.
o new list directory software, replacing the old www.lists.plaidworks.com site.
o lots of changes to the whole thing, to try to simplify using our
site, and to get ready for future improvements.
o rewritten list rules, to simplify the rules, update them to match
how we run the lists today, and resolve some of the issues users had
with previous versions of the rules (I ask everyone to please take a
look at the rules, because those are the rules we now manage the
lists to, and let me know if you have issues with them. I feel
they're more flexible, less dogmatic and easier to manage, but if you
have problems with the new rules, I want to hear about them to see if
they can be resolved.... Users are expected to abide by the rules if
they want to use our mailing lists...)
What's coming:
This is just the first phase of some major changes we've got planned
-- none of which we could start working on until this new server was
in place.
o Improved web archives: the web archives that come with mailman are,
okay, sort of, but we plan on upgrading them to a better version
that'll have more functionality and is better supported.
o Return of the text archives: the old FTP archives will re-appear
and be kept updated.
o Return of the search engine -- and it'll work....
o And a bunch of new stuff I'm not yet ready to talk about (but think
about other ways to communicate with each other, like IRC, IM, web
forums, etc... stay tuned, when we get this stuff going, we'll let
you know). We have lots of plans, and not TOO long before camp
opens...
Thanks for being part of our community here -- it's a lot of work,
but it's fun. and we don't do it for us, we do it for you...

MUZERALL INVITED TO CANADIAN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION SUMMER CAMP
Minnesota senior forward Nadine Muzerall has been invited to the Canadian
Hockey Association summer camp, Aug. 13-21, in Calgary, Alberta, joining a
group 41 other players.
The camp roster is made up of 13 silver medallists from the 1998 Winter
Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and 18 members of the gold medal 2000 Women's
World Championship team.
The CHA is used for evaluating players who will represent Canada at
international tournaments in 2000-2001, including the 2001 IIHF Women's
World Championships, to be held in Minneapolis.
Muzerall is the only Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women's League
player invited to the camp. Last season, she led the Gophers to the American
Women's College Hockey Alliance National Championship, leading the nation in
goals (49), power-play goals (16) and game-winning goals (9). She was a
first-team All-WCHA and AWCHA all-tournament selection.

Hello everyone,
This is just a short post to get an interest level. We are considering
organizing a Hockeyfest. Basically it would be a weekend of games, clinics
(ie skating, shooting, goaltending) and fun at as low of a cost as possible.
It is not a tournament just games against different teams and a chance to
meet new folks.
It will be in Portland, Oregon and we are thinking about late Jan or Feb.
Any comments or suggestions? Has anyone hosted a hockeyfest or attended one
before?
Thanks,
Tanya

Hi Folks,
I would be interested in what people's experiences have been with
different hockey camps. I just attended a 5 day camp in Banff (Banff
Hockey School). I was extremely disappointed in it. There were about 45
people on the ice at once, and so although we had nearly 4 hours of ice
time each day, we had very little actual skating time, expecially as the
instructors were real talkers (because women are, supposedly, real
listeners??). In addition, the drills we did do did not seem to build on
one another and there was virtually no individual attention to skating or
shooting form etc. I would certainly recommend against this camp.
But my further concern is that women are seen as just another market -- we
want to learn hockey after years of being excluded. Are we seen as an
"easy" group -- easy because we listen so that instructors talk and don't
really make us work hard? Easy because we are not seen to have
goals/potential in the same way that younger boys are? [For example, in
Banff we we're taught how to use the boards or play the body at all... nor
did we ever do sprints or even have any hard work-outs]. Anyway, I would
be interested in others' experiences and comments. Srh

That really sucks that the camp was bad.
Although it is really good to hear of your experience.
I keep trying to get to a camp but work is really bad,
But... if I finally ever do get to go, I am going to try either a college
summer camp that has a women's NCAA team in the winter, like Dartmouth, or a
camp that has a member or two from the US Olympic team.
They often also have coaches from colleges.
Skate hard, have fun!

I think it definitely depends on the camp. I have attended several and have
had different experiences at all of them. Although I have never attended a
strictly women's camp. I've had people take me seriously and work me twice
has hard as the men because they feel I need to prove something, and I've
had people almost ignore me cause they didn't think I should be out there
anyway. So I guess the best thing is to find out from someone who has been
to the camp before - if you can.

In 1999 I attended a Robby Glantz (http://www.robbyglantz.com/) Power
Skating Clinic (not just for women), and found it to be absolutely
worthwhile. I learned how to improve my starts, stops, turns, and
crossovers, as well as learning to skate faster with bungie cord drills and
video taping. I would recommend any program that uses video taping, because
I thought my knees were really bent a lot, until I saw myself on tape.
Surprise! Now that I can skate better, it is easier to focus on the game.
We had about 25 on the ice at a time, and the instructors talked just the
right amount. When they found out that I couldn't stop at all on my left
side, one of them took me aside for some extra drills so I could catch up to
the rest of the group. I was in the Pee Wees & up group, and there were
other females and other adults (and other adult females).

Srh,
It is unfortunate to hear about events that do not meet participants
expectations. I have seen mixed reviews on numerous hockey clinics and I
would encourage you to research the clinics extremely well prior to
attending. Find out who is creating the on ice curriculum and if it is
possible to get an overview of the on and off ice sessions. Some of the
best instructional clinics secure a mix of instructors with varying levels
of certification. These clinics set up their ice sessions with lead
instructors that are excellent facilitators with experience and
certification, guest instructors/ role models that are the stars in the game
and junior/upcoming instructors that are keen to learn from the mentor coach
on ice. Each session provides a mixture of the above.
We need to be aware of the fact that Female Hockey is another market to
target and that a lot of people in business will include female hockey in
their programs from a business standpoint alone. Fortunately however, there
are some excellent female hockey programs and clinics that are offered.
This newsgroup offers an excellent opportunity for people in the female
hockey world to share that information and their reasons for selecting and
continuing to take part in specific camps.

Has any
one been to a goalie school on the West Coast, including B.C? Do you have
any recommendations? Do they laugh at old ladies who still try to play?
I have had to give up, or am seriously thinking about giving up playing
forward. Especially in mixed recreational leagues. It will take me
about a total of eight months to recover from the current broken arm
(serious stuff), so I thought if I had a net to back into, I would be
better off. I have played goalie in pickup games and really like it.

I also attended a Robby Glantz weeklong program a few years ago- the camp

the camp had on-ice and dryland training. I was amazed at how much I improved

I attended a camp last summer that advertised that they were going to have a
member from the women;s olympic team, and 2 college coaches. When I called
to register (about 3 weeks before the camp) I was told that the Olympian will
not be there, but the coaches will. They cut the price of the camp in half.
I thought it was a pretty good deal.
I should have known something was up.
A lot of the girls/women attending the camp did not know that the Olympian
was not going to be there! They found this out only after they got to camp!
Imagine the disappointment of a 10 year old girl expecting to meet their
Olympic hero, only to find out that the coaches were the local HS coach, and
the local rink rat. (not to mention that they had ZERO women coaches - and
this was a girl's/women's camp.)
The program was extremely disorganized, and the daily schedule was 2 1.5 hour
sessions in the morning, and one 1 hr session in the evening. (This meant we
had to get dressed 3 times during the day.) We had the entire facility to
ourselves for the week (perhpas the only good point about this camp), so this
stupid schedule could not have been because of time constraints.
The first session was at 7:30 am, with breakfast being served at 7 am. (no
time to digest food and less time to get dressed!) I asked the prgram
director why we could not combine the 2 morning sessions to 1 3 hr session
(even suggested we start later, so we could have time to digest the food) and
he gave me a very rude and sarcastic answer.
There were zero extracurricular activites for the kids. And the list goes
on.....
Afterwards, I sent an email to the owner of the camp. I did not even receive
the courtesey of a reply.
I could go on forever about this camp.
I was extremely surprised by this - I know a few people who went to another
camp (owned by the same person) who gave that camp nothing but positive
feedback.
Whatever camp you select, I would recommened that you DO YOUR HOMEWORK and
find out about that camp first - especially if it is an out of town camp, and
you are taking time off from work (or school!) to go.
I can give a THUMBS UP to CAN-AM Adult Hockey camps. Lots of fun, top level
instruction, and off ice activities (if you have the energy!)

The son of one of Laurie's co-workers did two weeks in camps in B.C.,
one at Doug Bodger's camp, one at Craig Billington's. They really
liked both, but Billington's would be the one for a goalie... They
really liked both, FWIW.

Wanted!
I recently moved to Carlsbad, California, approximately 30 minutes north of
San Diego and would like to play with a travel team and/or get into some
tournaments in the area and also in the West (Prefer A League). If anyone
in this area knows of a team that needs a player either for a travel team or
any tournaments please let me know. Thanks!

Doesn't anyone actually _read_ what Chuq writes?
As he said in the info sent out when the lists changed last weekend,
each list member has to go to the Plaidworks web site and change
their own subscription to digest mode (or whatever other settings
they want, such as NoMail).
The web site address is placed at the bottom of _every_ message that
comes from the list.
I don't mean to sound like an ogre, but really, this list does not
have nearly enough traffic to be an excuse for not reading his
message.

Um, what val said.
What I send out administrative messages and mark stuff as very
important to read, it's usually a good idea to do so, and I *did*
cover the digest issue twice in those messages over the weekend.....

I've gone to two women's girls hockey camps. One was Peak Performance
in Minnesota which I recommend. They also run boys programs. I found
the on-ice instruction and the amount of ice-time (6 hrs a day) very
good. My only complaint about the program is that it is really geared
towards girls and not women. This is not surprising since out of the 30
or so participants only five were women, but it is something to be
aware of if you're an adult thinking of attending.
Two other camps I've attended that were not women's camps but were
extremely worthwhile were Robby Glantz and Turcotte Stickhandling.

I don't know about goalie clinics, but I do know a little about broken arms. I broke my right arm quite severely when I first started playing hockey. It takes quite a while to regain strength in the arm. I find that when my arm is feeling weak or sore playing goalie is easier on it than forward. Be sure to look for a light weight goalie stick. Also be sure to look into physical therapy for your arm, it really helps. I also bought some forearm guards and wore one for a year after I was back playing, it helped me feel more confident, and did protect my arm through a few falls.
As far as laughing at old women that want to play, well I am an old woman for hockey, I'm 45 and have only played for 2 1/2 years, and I find the best way to approach it is to laugh at yourself first. A sense of humor and friendliness can usually ward off any bad apples...and if someone is still going to laugh 'at' you the other players you are friends with will just tell them to shut up. At least that is my experience.
Just my 2 cents.

I too have recently posted about Robby Glantz, and had a very positive
experience.
As far as the bad camp. Many men have not seen women's hockey being played,
and don't realize the level and intensity that we really do play at.
Therefore they don't know how to react or coach when they are in that
situation.

I'm a 13 year old goalie from Michigan. I just went to a Rick Heinz goalie
school, and I was one of 3 girls there. I thought it was excellent. They had
on ice, off ice, and video sessions. The instructors treated us completely
normally. I'd recommend it for any goalie.

I posted a question concerning this tournament a while back but don't recall
seeing a response. I'm hoping someone (our Minnestoa list members) can offer
some help with the following questions.
1) When will the tickets be released for sale to the public?
2) Is anyone designing a package deal that would include game tickets, hotel
room, rental car, etc.?
Please, whenever ANY info on this tourny comes available, please post it to
the list! I'm planning on attending this tourny and would like to get
everything reserved as soon as it's available.
Thank you.....Rob

I attended the same campp as DATBYTES. I am sending this response to protect the innocent from the deceptive marketing techniques that STEVE JENSEN used to lure unsuspecting customers to his BADGERLAND CIVIC CENTER hockey camp in Spooner, WI. (He also owns and operates the Heartland hockey camp in Minnesota - so beware!) This camp was the biggest rip-off that I've ever seen. I flew halfway across the country because I was promised a weeklong camp complete with professional coaches and former women's Olympic Gold Medalists. I got neither. Mr. Jensen promised to give the campers a $120 credit due to the fact that the Olympians weren't there but after several attempts to contact him (even resorting to sending him a registered letter in the mail) I got no response and a year later, I have no refund.
On a positive note, I also attended the UNH hockey camp. This camp was awesome! It was intense and worth every cent that I paid. I highly recommend it. It was mostly geared towards high school aged girls but there were a few women there and the coaches adapted their style to fit all levels.

I'm not sure if I remember you from camp, but........ Do you remember when
some of the kids mentioned to Mike (the camp director) that they were not
having fun? His response was " this is HOCKEY CAMP. If you wanted FUN, you
should have gone to Girl Scout Camp!"
AAARGH! What a jerk......
Did you guys ever drop the water balloons that I bought for you on his head?
(I left early the last morning, and did not stick around for the grand
finale......) }:-)
On the other side.... if you have the receipt from the registered mail, (and
a copy of the letter that you sent) I suggest that you (and anyone else who
has attended this camp that has not received the promised refund) have your
parents find a friend or a family member who is a laywer, and ask them to
write a letter to the camp owner asking for the promised refund. Ask the
lawyer to use the term "mail fraud" in the letter. That should elicit a
response. (as long as you received a copy of the brochure with the
advertisement for the camp promising the Olympian in the mail.)
Or, you may possibly want to investigate making a case in small claims court
- you would want to check to see if you can file the case in your local
court, (as opposed to Spooner, WI).
When the camp owner sees that you are really SERIOUS, you just might get your
money back without actually having to go to court.
I have had a few things resolved just by having a friend/family member who is
a lawyer write a letter on my behalf. I have had other things resolved
simply by filing a case in small claims court (and they were settled in my
favor without even having to appear in court!)
Good luck!
Jill
p.s. CYA statement. I am NOT a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. the
advice offered is not a soliciation for legal services. It is just the
advice from one consumer to another. Always consult your parents before
consulting a lawyer or filing a claim in court. Past perfomance is no
guarantee of future results.

This event will be hosted by Minnesota from April 2-8, 2001. We are still
in the planning stages and as soon as ticket information is available, I
will post it. All information must be approved by the IIHF in September
before we can release any information on location of the event, tickets,
hotels, etc. I can tell you that the arena for the games on Thursday,
Saturday and Sunday will seat 9,000. We plan to sell it out so buy early
once this information is posted. The USA Hockey National Girls and Women's
Tournament is also being hosted at the same time in Minnesota for 52-54
teams from across the United States. This will give these girls/women an
opportunity to watch the USA Women's National team in person prior to the
Olympics.

Does anyone know approximately how many girls and women are registered with USA Hockey, or would know where I can find out this information? I'm currently organizing a tournament and this info would come in quite handy.
Thanks so much!

Does anyone own a pair of Bauer Reactor 3000 goalie skates? And if so, what is
the sizing differential between the listed man's size and a woman's size?
Thanks for any assistance from my daughter, Christine.

Hi,
I just baught a pair of Bauer Reactor 3000 goalie skates. I wear a women's size 7 1/2-8 in shoes. I fit into both the bauer 5 and 5 1/2 however my toes were barely touching in the 5 and probably wouldn't be when the padding broke in and compressed (my last pair were 5 and worked) but I went to the 5 1/2 this time and I like them.
So I would say my women's shoe is probably a 7.75 and I need a 5.25 skate. However, nothings this precise so I take it up to the next size (8 shoe wearing 5 1/2 skate). I hope this helps.
Good Luck keeping the pucks out,
Iggy

Im sorry, but I just had to say something. It seems to
me like there are to many people just not listening
and also not using common sense. It has been stated
how to get off of the list, including very recently
when the lists were moved. It is common sense that
when you don't know how to do something that you go to
the webpage of whatever causes the problem and see if
you can find the answer there. Anyone who has been on
any of these lists......for even a couple days knows
that messages go to the list, not to something or
someone that automatically removes them.
Im sorry.......but this is really frustrating me.

Hi, there was some talk on here awhile ago about hockey camps. I just got back yesterday from one at Bowling Green State University. It was for kids 10-18 I believe. I had a great time, learned a lot. There were only 4 girls there in all the age groups, but they (excluding myself) were better than almost all the boys. The coaches were very helpful and would answer any questions and help you with any problems. I think I learned a lot about skating, my shot has improved, and I think I know a lot more about positioning now. I would reccomend this camp. It was well run, the people in charge did not put up with any crap and it was just a really good time.
Now for my question, did someone on here say that they went to a Turcotte Stickhandling camp and if so, what did you think of it?
~Liz

Hi, I have another question I meant to include in my last e-mail but I forgot. My coach at the BGSU camp said that I should take skating lessons. He said if I did that it would help me all around. At the local rink, I have almost exhausted their classes (read classes: little kids running around doing nothing). Do any of you know of any place in Dayton to take skating lessons that would be worth my time and money or have any suggestions as to how I should go about finding these type of classes? I have also heard about people who give private hockey/skating lessons, any ideas on how to find those type of people also? Thank you for any help you might have, Liz

I went to BGSU from 93 until 98 (I live 45 mins from

there. The camp, I think it is pretty good, but I dont
know if I would recommend it. The counselours, and

the coaches and stuff, they were very nice. The reason
I say I wouldn't recommend it it because it is a guys
camp....and once you reach the hitting group, the guys
can get pretty nasty. I don't know anything about you
or your skill level, but as for me, my last year there
was hell. There was only 1 or 2 guys better then me,
and that resulted in many dirty hits and rough play. I
was hit from behind numerous times, especially at the
last game....when all the parents are there. I do
think it is run well, but as for the kids.....if you
have a skill level better then most of them...they
will do anything to stop you...including almost
putting yo in the hospital.
