USA Hockey held development camps this past summer for 15 and 16 years olds,
17 and 18 years olds, and a Festival in August comprised of girls selected
to advance from the youth camps plus collegiate players. An identification
process has been in place since USA Hockey began holding development camps
in the early 1990's and that is basically where players are coming from.
The college teams are scouted each year for the best players as well as
post-graduate players who have already been identified. USA Hockey will
participate in the Three Nations Cup in Finland the week of December 17.
Players will be invited to training camp approximately ten days earlier.
The World Championships are in Finland March 8-14, 1999. Players will be
invited from the player pool to participate in that event and will begin
practice approximately 7-10 days prior to that event. No open tryouts were
discussed at the USA Hockey Girls/Women's Section Committee meeting held in
Chicago on September 25-26. Ben Smith spoke with the committee about the
progress of the development camps and the scouting process that has been
ongoing for years. A large player pool has been identified over the past
years and new females are added to the list through the youth development
camp process. Each District of USA Hockey is allocated a specific number of
players allowed to advance to the development camps. Therefore, the entire
United States has tryout processes in place to view these players and select
them for advancement to the summer youth development camps. There will be
80 players invited next year for each two year age group, thus providing USA
Hockey with 160 total females to evaluate for future National and Olympic
teams.

Hello everybody! I'm back on line even though I am on course
in Trenton, Ontario for the month. I love modern technology.
I was going to drive to Montreal today to see the intra-squad
game but didn't manage it. Did anybody out there attend? How
do things look?
