Congratulations, Lisa, you have one more *proof* positive that women's
hockey isn't ready to go pro. Well, I for one don't think it matters
too much if the UNH fans are delusional about their performance or not;
I think it is terrific that they have fans who love them anyway. I got
up feeling pretty chipper this morning, and all this negativism is
starting to bring me down. So, I offer some really positive things
about women's hockey to start your day/weekend:

1) Team USA is on tour! They are drawing bigger crowds than ever
before and are even going to get one nationally (US) televised game.
WOW, the closest I have ever been to seeing other women play hockey is a
Canadian Hockey video I bought.

2) Women's hockey is beginning to draw some really unlikely fans. My
father in law (who grew up in Texas, but is now living in colorado) and
I don't really see eye-to-eye on much. Most of the time I think he is
pretty sexist. This man actually called and asked if I wanted to come
to Colorado to see the US women play. Some of my teammates and I
finally couldn't stand it, so we have thrown down a ton of money and two
precious days of vacation to fly to Colorado Springs to see them. ( I
may even have to give the US women credit for improving my relationship
with my father-in-law!)

3) So, UNH was crushed by Team USA. Hey, at least they got a chance to
*play* against team USA. What a great experience! (I'm excited just to
get to watch them play - but the chance to play against them must have
been awsome!) Look at the HUGE strides that college hockey has taken in
the last few years. I am so happy to see that more women than ever are
able to go to college on hockey scholarships. The ablity for women to
get an education far outwieghs my worries about the caliber of their
play.

and here is the real reason that I am so happy this morning....
4) Our sport is growing. I started playing almost four years ago. I
think that at that time, I met three other women who were playing here.
A year ago, there were no women's teams in Texas. Nine months ago there
were enough of us to go to a tournament together. Six months ago, we
formed the Houston Harpies (this week, we had 23 women at practice).
Shortly thereafter, a second women's organization (Sirens) formed in
Houston. We are leaving tonight to go to Austin, where a new women's
team has formed. The Central Texas Furies are hosting the FIRST EVER
TEXAS WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. There are four teams competing
(The Harpies are sending two teams!). The Furies have put together a
really nice weekend for us. I haven't been this thrilled about
something in a long time.

Have a terrific weekend - and keep your stick on the ice!

After opening up a 2-0 lead in the first period and pretty much dominating most of the game, the Gophers (University of Minnesota) lost to Harvard 3-2. The winning goal was by Kirsten Suurkask of Harvard with 5:14 left in the third period. The All-American Tournament continues today with Gustavus Adolphus (Minnesota) playing British Columbia (Canada) at 4:30, followed by Augsburg (Minnesota) and UNH (New Hampshire) at 7:30. Saturday and Sunday all have three games each day. Dorene

Thanks to widget for the positive notes. I've wondered why the
disparity in the score has caused so much heated debate.

Lost in this argument is the outcome of the game between Augsburg and
UM. Also a score of "very many to not enough." In that game, there
were four players that knew very well the story of playing on a team
that gets shellacked by the winner. Those early experiences helped them
(perhaps others as well) on a journey that led to a National
Championship. For some of those players, losing to UM is a first step
in a process they have been through before.

I would say that the real winners were the UNH players. They have a
clear picture of where they need to go if they are to be truly elite.
Losing always has positives for the players and coaches if proper
perspective is learned early on.

The "loser" (?? They aren't losers!) would be our National Women's
Team. They need a regular schedule of games with a caliber of opponent
that can properly prepare them for Nagano. Games with teams like UNH
don't provide the experience one would hope for. Still, even in playing
teams like UNH, if the coach is savvy, progress can occur in a blowout.

Each year I receive a little bulletin in the mail that reminds me of an
important season end duty. To prepare my players for the realistic
possibility that our team will lose. Regardless of level of play and
the number of tournaments, regular season record or the score of any
given game along the way; eventually there will be only one winner for
each classification. That fact does not inherently imply that all the
other players, on all the other teams, are all losers and therefore
unworthy participants or that their season was a waste of time and
effort.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me the dates of the olympic games? (I
don't mean just the hockey-although it is my passion- but what are the
dates of the whole event?)
Many thanks!
