George,
I have no idea who BTW is, but I do know that there is recruiting of
non-academically sound players in all schools. Sour grapes, nah, not even
whine. My child is very NEW to the sport and happy where she is.
Good luck,
Jil

Um, Jill, the next time you see BTW written, please refer to it as "By The Way
." Just helping you understand the some of the common abbreviations. :)

I believe Manon is playing with the Reno Renegades. She just
recorded her first win with them. She is playing there, in hopes
that the experience will get her on the National team.

Hi Everybody! Alot of you know me already, but I'll introduce myself for
those who don't. My name is Jackie Isaacs, I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm
an Adult player in a Men's League and a Mite Coach for the Cincinnati Amateur
Hockey Association. I've also recently helped in forming Cincinnati's first
Women's team. I'm writing today because I would like to solicit everyone's
input on the subject of Growing the Sport for the young girls here. I took
all 3 girls who wanted to play in the Mite division and put them on my team,
1 is my daugher. (They did great by the way, one of them being my 2nd leading
scorer!) Hockey has grown tremendously in Cincinnati, but still, we only had
8 girls playing total (all age divisions). Since many heads are better than
one, I would really appreciate any and all input on what I can do to help
recruit more little girls to start playing. Even though we only have 8 or 9
good core players on my women's team, it's been a great experience and
something I want my daughter and her friends to be able to have someday and
hopefully better! Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I've thought about talking at schools, but I don't know how to get started.
I give up most of my time and effort to this sport the way it is, so I would
work very, very hard at this. I'm real dedicated. Before my own game last
night, I watched part of a midget boys game and there they were, checking the
crap out of each other and engaging in fistacuffs every 3-4 minutes and I
thought to myself, "I have got to start working on this lack of girls in
hockey here now!!!!!!" Such a great sport, EVERYONE deserves to play it with
their PEERS!!!!
I'll be waiting for your suggestions.

In the Tucson Hockey club there aren't many girls either. The way my
daughter got interested is that one of the moms had put flyers at my
daughter's school. She brought it home and said "Mom, can I do this?"
The rest is history. They haven't done this recently because of lack of
volunteers and coordination, but I thing that if you could distribute
flyers in the months before the regular season starts at schools,
supermarket info boards, or any other business that would allow you to
post this type of notice, with a "calling all girls" type of message, it
might up your numbers. Usually the boys don't seem to have difficulty
finding out that these types of activities exist. A lot of it is word of
mouth. But with such a smaller number of girls playing, the word of mouth
doesn'tt always get the word out. HTH :)

Yup, I you are right. Infact here in the bay area Manon was just
mentioned in an article along with Tonya Harding.

Apparently Tonya-hey watch out with that blunt instrument-Harding was
doing a skating program between periods of the hockey game. The
article made a point of saying that Manon kept her distance from Tonya
(maybe to stay free from injury, but then I don't think that Tonya
     wants to play goalie).

Visions of that encounter made me chuckle.
