All,

I birded CCFS this morning 9/12/02, starting early at 6:50am. The
number of birds was pretty modest until I worked the area along the
creek north of the trailer - many YELLOW WARBLERS in this stretch, as
well as a few other things. A dark juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON was
perched on a snag near the trailer, occasionally harassing the
STARLINGS. Later a second large brown falcon flew east over the creek
(after the Peregrine?) and at 7:20am I had the PRAIRIE FALCON flying
slowly north along the edge of the sludge ponds.

I had my first LINCOLN'S SPARROW of the fall, but a peek at the
banding board revealed that I had been scooped - one was banded
yesterday. A MERGANSER flew south over the overflow channel, but I
was too deep in the brush to get a good look and identify it to
species. The GRAY FOX was still hanging around and quite bold.

Migrant totals:

  1 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE
  4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS
 13 WESTERN/PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS
  3 WARBLING VIREOS
  1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
34 YELLOW WARBLERS (probably actually more than this)
  9 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS
  5 WILSON'S WARBLERS
  2 WESTERN TANAGERS
  1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW

A friend of mine had a Burrowing Owl perch on his front yard fence for some period of time on September 10. He lives near the intersection of Pruneridge and Saratoga Ave. His wife took some video of it, and he emailed me a link to a still from the video. Pretty strange place for a Burrowing Owl. Cheers,

Richard

Although it's not far from a nine-hole golf course, so that's probably
where they're hiding...

Tonight, I took a great group of people into Almaden-Quicksilver County
Park on an after hours permit. Our target was Common Poorwill and
any other nocturnal species. We went in at the McAbee Rd. entrance.

Before twilight, TURKEY VULTUREs flew in to a roost on the ridge above
the Senador Mine plaque. A baby California Kingsnake soaked up the last
bit of warmth that the ground could offer before nightfall.

A half moon kept the area well-lit as twilight faded when the first
poorwill responded to a tape. We had poorwill responding from two
directions with possibly as many as 4 individuals. Kendric Smith, Kathy
Robertson, and others actually saw a couple of flight silhouettes before
the birds started calling from one direction. Good rods....

When the poorwill stopped responding, I switched to a Western Screech-
Owl tape and one responded immediately from the tree right next to us.
After a few minutes of triangulating and searching, Jan Hintermeister
spotted the little gray owl and everyone was able to enjoy a nice long
look.

I tried the poorwill tape again but Karen DeMello and Jan only heard a
short response. Further tries were futile and it seemed that the window
for response had closed. So, we didn't get a clear view of one sitting on
the ground, as I did last week.

I will be taking in two more groups, on Thursday, 9/19, and Saturday,
9/21. I expect that the experiences will be different. If you are
interested in joining us on these nights, there are still some spaces.

By the way, the head ranger told me that one of the reasons for the
permit was that the Park has two reservoirs and they are still on
reservoir watch. We did not see any terrorists in the park.
