On Saturday morning (Aug. 10) I checked Coyote Creek north of Montague
Expy from the east side. The only non-resident birds I found were two
Pacific-Slope Flycatchers and one Western Tanager; a flock of 13 or 14
Robins may have also represented dispersal (I think local breeders were in
smaller numbers). From there I went to the EEC. Ann Verdi had already
checked the salt pond, so I mainly checked for landbirds: quite a few
Common Yellowthroats, including a fledgeling being fed, but nothing unusual.
Finally, the pond at State and Spreckels (with Ann) had at least 40 Greater
Yellowlegs and 1 Lesser (but no Dowitchers, and no Ruff - one was reported
on Birdbox from there on Sunday).
A mid-afternoon visit to Crittenden Marsh turned up the two juvenlie
Baird's Sandpipers already mentioned by John Meyer. The salt pond to the
north had one Brown Pelican, and a couple of the Least Terns, rather cooper-
atively, were flying (feeding) near the west end.
On Sunday (August 11), on a mid-afternoon visit to the Sunnyvale Water
Pollution Control Plant ponds, I estimated about 1500 Red-Necked Phalaropes
(I could easily have been off by a couple of hundred); I spotted one or two
still close to alternate plumage, and there were a number of juveniles. A
single adult Bonaparte's Gull was swimming with them. A roving flock of
about 40 Brown-Headed Cowbirds seemed typical of this location in late
summer. I looked over the small shorebirds at the northeast corner of the
larger pond, but many were too distant to do much with. At one point I
spotted a pale bird (possible Snowy Plover???), but that part of the flock
took off and redistributed before I could focus on it.
On the walk back, I found that the few dozen Forster's Terns on the west
levee between the ponds (near the bend) had been joined by a basic-plumaged
Common Tern. I watched this bird on the ground for about 5 minutes (around
4:15 PM), but it flew while I was scoping, and I didn't see where it had
gone, nor did I refind it. [Bill: I'll separately send you a writeup, since
I'd rather do it from my notes, which I don't have with me just now.]

Hello All,

Here are a few birds that may be of some interest.

Alviso, Sat Aug 10:

EEC: Two AMERICAN PIPITS seen along the muddy shoreline of Pond A16 behind the Visitor's Center. One pipit appeared a bit larger than the other. The larger bird had heavy streaking throughout its front side from the throat area to the belly; some streaking on the back, and two wing bars (possible japonicus??). The smaller pipit had less extensive streaking on the front side, only as far as the breast area - not extending beyond. Both pipits had pink legs. Also on A16 two BLACK SKIMMERS were seen roosting, but the phalaropes which had been so numerous here over the past couple of weeks had departed.

State & Spreckles: Al Eisner and I saw a LESSER YELLOWLEGS in with a group of approximately 40 Greater Yellowlegs.

"Patch" birding, Sun, Aug 11:

SCVWD Ponds (Almaden Expwy & Coleman Rd): A MARSH WREN was seen in the cattails in the Guadalupe Channel (I hadn't seen that species in this locale for a long time). Three adult male NUTMEG MANNKINS were in the cattails in the smaller pond to the north behind the new SCV Water District office. Incidentally, the native plants recently planted around the main pond and other areas along the Guadalupe appear to be flourishing. Newly planted trees around the pond include cottonwood, willow, sycamore, with understory plants such as elderberry, currant, toyon, native blackberry, etc. As these plants mature they should be providing good habitat for birds.

Almaden Reservoir/Alamitos Rd: Three WOOD DUCKS seen in the upper end of the reservoir as well as two GREEN HERONS. Birds of interest upstream by the O'Day property on Alamitos Rd included W. WOOD-PEWEE, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK (juv), BULLOCK'S ORIOLE (juv), adult male YELLOW WARBLER, one lone WILD TURKEY, over 30 CALIF QUAIL (many young), and many LESSER GOLDFINCH (no Lawrence's Goldfinch in the mix this time).

Folks:

This morning, 8/12/2002, there were many piscivores in the ponds along
the frontage road of the Palo Alto FCB. Moderate numbers of Am. White
Pelicans, Great Egrets, and California Gulls were noted, but a total of 165
SNOWY EGRETS was a good count for recent summers. Two BLACK SKIMMERS were on
their wintering island in Charleston Slough. An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER with
worn retrices was along the east side of the Stevens Creek Tidal Marsh.

Hello,

last week we saw a pair of Band Tailed Pigeons in our backyard.
We were pretty excited (but then we are sort of novice bird watchers).

Are they common in the Bay Area? We had never seen them before.

Folks:

With respect to Bobbie Morrison's question on Band-tailed
Pigeons, they are a fairly common to common resident of the wet,
coastal forests, and less common in the drier, higher elevation
woodlands in the Diablo Range. They will forage widely from where
they nest and also disperse widely. They are occasionallly on the
valley floor in the summer and can be found almost anywhere in the
winter.

David Suddjian and I have had long discussions about their
historical status, and it appears that their population has expanded
in Central California in the last 50 to 100 years, but there are
few obvious reasons.

All,

On my way back from yesterday's (8/11-Sunday) Farallon Islands pelagic trip,
I stopped at Crittenden Marsh. Although I got caught up in all the concert
traffic and ended up parking in the middle of all that mess, I managed to
get to the "marsh" at around 6:15 (unfortunately without a scope) and was
surprised to find at least 1000 shorebirds loafing on the dried up ground.
Most were Least and Western Sandpipers but there were also quite a few
Semipalmated Plovers (200). I watched one plover fly in and it landed right
next to a Baird's Sandpiper. I lost sight of it quickly when many of the
shorebirds got up. However, I saw one more as it flew over me and called on
its way to feeding grounds exposed by the receding tide. Also present were
about 20 Long-billed Curlews as well as a handful of Whimbrel. Yesterday's
high tide was at 4 pm so I would think that optimal viewing conditions this
evening will be from about 3:00 when shorebirds will be arriving until about
7:30 when the last ones will be leaving to return to their mud dining rooms.
Since I had no scope with me, I couldn't tell if other species were present
but it wouldn't surprise me if other goodies are spending high tide time out
there.

Bill Bousman Wrote:

The composite list at the end of July had increased from 248 to 254. A
Red Knot was found on 7/27 in the Palo Alto estuary (one of the best places
for it in the county). The first juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper of the
season was at the CCFS waterbird pond the same day. Our only remaining "2",
Red-necked Phalarope finally started moving through on 7/5, when five were
found on Salt Pond A16 (They are now in the thousands at the Sunnyvale WPCP
ponds). As expected, Least Terns showed up on 7/6 at Salt Pond A2E (and are
still there). At least three Canyon Wrens were found along Coyote Creek on
7/4 during a day hike. A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak was a one-day wonder at
Stevens Creek CP on 7/7.

The only "4s" left are: Red-throated Loon, Black Rail, and Pectoral
Sandpiper. The latter is the most likely, in late September. The rest of the
year will be exciting.

Late yesterday afternoon I had 5 CASPIAN TERNS fly over my house. An
interesting addition to the yard list.

On Sunday, August 11th, we saw a GOLDEN EAGLE near Crittenden Marsh around 8
p.m. This bird was all chocolate brown with a slightly lighter colored head
and neck. It was perched on top of one of the towers at the end of Moffet
Field (near the plane sitting in the yard back there) and then it flew west
to the top of one of the nearby high voltage transmission line towers.
Andrea.
